Quartonian VAST
Posted by roger on February 4th, 2006VAST Mixer (Visualise Audio Stills and Text) is my own specialised VJ software which is designed to create beat synchronised animations from still images, text files, and audio input. It also does camera fx on live input and plays background movies.
Vast Mixer is mostly created in Quartz Composer and Interface Builder. However there is now some Cocoa code to manage the multiple screen display option and I will soon be adding load/save/set management of all settings using core data code.
Seperate windows for preview mode are my newest wish for VAST Mixer development, which I hope to add soon.
VAST Mixer is not available for sale or download (yet). It is in use by members of the Inside-Us-All collective and has successfully been used to create graphics at the Glade Festival 2006 (in triple screen HD) and on the MTV Exit tour in Eastern europe working together with Microchunk.

VAST is modular, so far there’s five modules but if I can figure out how to squeeze more on the interface this may grow!
VSM (Video Stills Manipulator) – available as a seperate download.
TexDrive – beat synced text animations from text files.
Q-Analyser – 3d audio reactive realtime graphics
BG Layer – single layer quicktime or fx on live camera input as background.
Mixer – mix all modules in 4:3, Hex Cluster or super wide (triple output) layout patterns.
My performance rig for most gigs consists of one computer doing clip triggering using either Modul8 or Resolume and a second laptop running VAST for doing text, stills and audio reactive imagery. I then combine both outputs through an Edirol V4 video mixer.
A quicktime showreel demonstrating what can be done with VAST is available for download on the Eskatonia Visuals website.
VAST High Resolution Multi Output

Latest version of VAST running in a superwide mode suitable for spanning three projectors with a Matrox TripleHead2Go.
VAST is being designed for future use with multiscreen high resolution output. On a Mac Pro tower it would be possible to drive seven video outputs and render output at extremely high resolutions. High resolution stills, text or HD movies can be used as content sources to create immersive high resolution displays for concerts, theatre, gallery or museum installations.
VAST has also been tested driving three outputs from a MacBook Pro at a total resolution of 2400×600 using a Matrox TripleHead2Go. Details here.
While initially being developed as a patch for my own live performances, I am interested in customising this for permanent or touring multi screen installations, please feel free to contact me with enquiries about designing a custom system.
