New QC features in 10.4.4

Posted by roger on January 12th, 2006

According to info from Pol 10.4.4 included ability to change fonts dynamically when rendering in Quartz Composer and several other bug fixes and improvements. Also the new Quartz Composer is already native on intel and the new iMac’s are ‘very fast’ for Quartz Composer.

The dynamic font changing is worth the price of admission alone!

Wrapper for Core Image to Freeframe

Posted by roger on November 23rd, 2005

Pete Warden has just released a bridge that makes core image filters appear as freeframe plugins on mac hosts. So now Flowmotion and Isadora can access core image filters…. This is cool, and worthy, but what would really interest me is the reverse…. Read the rest of this entry »

Future Quartonian Development Plans

Posted by roger on October 23rd, 2005

I need to put Quartonian development aside for a couple of months to work on some other creative projects.

Work in Progress….

Posted by roger on October 11th, 2005

Quartonian 0.4 is coming. Need another week to finish it and been very busy during my time in Australia.
Version 0.4 will have the main tree of the composition simplified to allow easier modification, plus more layouts, midi hooks and better default effects chains and have a toggle to switch between “normal” and “hex screen” layouts on the fly. Banks of clips and clip speed adjustments may or may not make it in to this version.
This will be the last release for a while as after this I want to concentrate on learning Cocoa and writing a gui front end for it.

Core Image on the new ibook.

Posted by roger on September 23rd, 2005

I finally got time to test the new ibook model with the Radeon 9550. I loaded up my Quartonian patch, some other Quartz Composer files and the Motion compatibility checker on a USB stick and visited the Apple store in Regent St.
The new ibook is completely core image accelerated. Quartonian ran at a fair clip even on 640×480 clips. Motion compatibility checker said yep this machine is supported. Read the rest of this entry »

Quartonian Hex Patch for Earthdance [updated]

Posted by roger on August 28th, 2005

I’m currently working on a special version of Quartonian that outputs to Hexagonal clusters of screens. The concept was inspired by KIllingFrenzys and Pixylights fine work from the AVIT retreat. I’m planning to use this at Earthdance in London on Sep 17th at the Coronet. The patch will be available for any other Earthdance VJ’s to use and KF also has a hexagonal patch available written in Max/MSP here.

A first release of my hex patch is finished and initally available only to Earthdance VJ’s. Make sure the promoter of your local Earthdance event is registered with Earthdance.org to obtain the ftp site and password for the Hex patch. After Earthdance I will release the patch to the public.

Custom patches for Quartz Composer now a reality

Posted by roger on August 25th, 2005

This information has been out for a while now but I thought I’d summarise and link to it all from one place. Currently there is no official API to allow adding of new functionality to Quartz Composer. However it appears that all the functionality is there to allow it, but for whatever reason it is not yet documented. Thanks to the efforts of Clockskew and Quartzcomposer.jp we have all the information we need to program new patches for Quartz Composer now…. And a few people have already started working on expanding Quartz Composer.

Sonica pictures and gig report

Posted by roger on August 25th, 2005

The Sonica 2005 festival in Italy was huge… Great fun working with the guys from Inside Us All, Quadroptica and Frolic, sunny weather, a beautiful location and six plexiglass screens to project onto… Couldn’t ask for more.

This is the second major outing for Quartonian mixer after glade. Was very useful for creating that 4AM mayhem visuals mash up feeling.

see inside for pictures….
