Adventures in midi control, serious bugs

Posted by roger on February 27th, 2006

I’ve been using midi controllers with Quartz Composer for a while now and mostly they work, however I’ve just recently discovered some major bugs in the current (10.4.5) midi implementation which I wanted to share information and workarounds on here. Unfortunately for some of them there is no easy solution and it severely limits [...]

Latest on VAST, Quartonian blog to cover more topics

Posted by roger on February 12th, 2006

I did visuals last night at Fairy Tales at the Coronet together with Quadroptica and Inside-Us-All. I used my latest build of Quartonian VAST and a second machine running Grid Pro. A couple of things have come out of this including my decision to expand the scope of the Quartonian blog.

Storing state in Quartz Composer compositions

Posted by roger on February 6th, 2006

I’ve been thinking more about state storing and logic processing in Quartz Composer based on some comments made by Vade. Currently the options are very limited and seemingly that’s a deliberate design decision on Apple’s part, you’re not supposed to store state in a Quartz Composer composition. So what’s the options? Hack [...]

QC Hidden patches work on non enabled macs

Posted by roger on February 3rd, 2006

The QC Hidden patches work fine on Mac’s that don’t have Clockskew’s enabler plugin installed. I tested this by compiling an XCode App that uses them and copying it to another machine which didn’t have that plugin.

Organoptics FX launched!

Posted by roger on January 13th, 2006

I’ve been busy recently on another Quartz Composer project which has now seen the light of day. Organoptics FX is a set of 31 plugins for Avid Xpress editing systems created as Quartz Composer patches using Noise Industries Factory Floor.
This is a commercial product but will not effect Quartonian development which will remain a free [...]

New QC features in 10.4.4

Posted by roger on January 12th, 2006

According to info from Pol 10.4.4 included ability to change fonts dynamically when rendering in Quartz Composer and several other bug fixes and improvements. Also the new Quartz Composer is already native on intel and the new iMac’s are ‘very fast’ for Quartz Composer.

The dynamic font changing is worth the price of admission alone!

For those with ATI Radeon video cards, installing the optional drivers from ATI will enable some very useful options including 4x Full Scene Anti Aliasing (supersampling).

Mac OS X 10.4.4 to get Quartz Composer updates

Posted by roger on November 24th, 2005

Quartz Composer has not been significantly updated since it’s initial release in 10.4.0, this is despite there being several nasty bugs in javascript support plus many other issues.

Work in Progress….

Posted by roger on October 11th, 2005

Quartonian 0.4 is coming. Need another week to finish it and been very busy during my time in Australia.
Version 0.4 will have the main tree of the composition simplified to allow easier modification, plus more layouts, midi hooks and better default effects chains and have a toggle to switch between “normal” and “hex screen” [...]

Core Image on the new ibook.

Posted by roger on September 23rd, 2005

I finally got time to test the new ibook model with the Radeon 9550. I loaded up my Quartonian patch, some other Quartz Composer files and the Motion compatibility checker on a USB stick and visited the Apple store in Regent St.
The new ibook is completely core image accelerated. Quartonian ran at a [...]

Custom patches for Quartz Composer now a reality

Posted by roger on August 25th, 2005

This information has been out for a while now but I thought I’d summarise and link to it all from one place. Currently there is no official API to allow adding of new functionality to Quartz Composer. However it appears that all the functionality is there to allow it, but for whatever reason [...]
