Intel Core Duo

My MacBook Pro is on order…My Quartonian apps are already universal binaries but it will be nice to be able to actually test them :)

What about the other VJ apps out there? Whats native? what will soon be? and what’s likely to take a long time coming?

I joined the select developer program and purchased my MacBook Pro with the very generous hardware discount. This saved me a small amount of money on the total cost of a MacBook Pro with Developer discount plus select membership so it was effectively free to join Select. Now I get a chance to give feedback earlier on in the dev process to the Quartz Composer team and I’ll get Leopard (10.5) early with whatever improvements that brings. Sweet!
However I’m now going to have to be more careful in my posts as I have access to the beta seeds under Non Disclosure with Apple.

Hey Apple people reading this (my server logs tell me there is quite a few of you…): I promise to be good and only post about released versions of OS X. Thanks for all the hard work on Quartz Composer and Core Image so far, great work….. but…. I will keep giving you a hard time where it could be even better (cough midi support cough).

So on to Mac Intel VJ Apps:

  • Grid Pro Cocoa (now in beta) Vidvox has just released the first beta of their complete Cocoa rewrite of Grid Pro as a universal binary
  • Modul8 2.5 (shipping May 6th) will be universal binary.
  • Quartonian Mixer + VSM (already universal).
  • Arkaos “soon” unknown if this will be 4.0 or an update to 3.51
  • Ableton Live 5.2 (currently in beta) Not a VJ app but widely used by VJ’s.

The following applications are Director based and so will not be native until Adobe/Macromedia ports Director to Mac OS X Intel (mid-late 2006?)

  • Flowmotion
  • MotionDive Tokyo

The following applications are MAX/MSP based and so will not be native until Cycling 74 ports to Mac OS X Intel (late 2006)

  • VDMXX
  • Grid Pro
  • Livid Union
  • ES-X
  • AVMixer Pro
  • RC Fuse. I can’t find any information about a Mac intel version, if anyone knows contact me.
  • Edo. The developer of Edo has explicitly stated that he will not port to Mac OS X Intel.

When I recieve my MacBook Pro I’ll comment on the performance with Quartonian Mixer, I’m hopeful of being able to mix HD video in realtime and of being able to drive three external screens at once using a Matrox TripleHead2Go….
