Quartz Composer has not been significantly updated since it’s initial release in 10.4.0, this is despite there being several nasty bugs in javascript support plus many other issues. Leaked copies of the release notes for the upcoming 10.4.4 indicate that we are finally getting a significant update with new features in the Quartz Composer editor. It’s unknown if there will be any new nodes or the release of the API for adding new nodes to Quartz Composer.

Of interest to me is several changes to font handling. Hopefully we will now be able to change fonts dynamically through an input port. The limitation that font’s had to be “hardcoded” into the settings and were not an input was a major limitation stopping Quartz Composer being used for many kinds of design work; you can’t create a graphics plugin using Quartz Composer to render fonts if the Art Director can’t fiddle the font easily….

Also, leaked versions of the Intel osx86 builds indicate that OS X on Intel has Quartz Composer included and that it is up to date with the PPC version.

If anyone has run Quartz Composer on the Intel developer build I’d be very interested in hearing about a report on performance. More information on the status of the current Intel developer builds is on the osx86 project pages and forum.

Mac OS X version 10.4.4 is expected to be released in early December.
